December 9th is the death anniversary of Randall Mohan Butisingh, the 100-year old blogger, who proved that age need not be a deterrent to pursuing your dreams. This resident of Florida of Indian origin ran a very popular blog on his website lifebeginsat80.com. While he ran it, it was often listed as one of the best senior websites on the Internet.

Hindi Prachaar Sabha honoured Randall Butisingh

Randall Butisingh was born on December 1, 1912 and was a person with many interests. He was a teacher for 45 years. During his career, he also worked as a freelance journalist and later went into the printing business. He was one of the largest suppliers for greeting cards in Guyana, where he resided. He was a brilliant poet as well, even publishing his own book of poetry. He also became a member of the Guyana Hindi Prachar Sabha so that he could teach the language to more students. He was their chief correspondent and editor of their journal.

“My chief interests were health and strength of body and freedom of mind.   I learnt many lessons along the way.”

Randall Butisingh in Epilogue to My Story

Even after his retirement, he was very active and very soon started his own blog series. The website was launched in 1999 and attempted to help older adults overcome their fear of online interactions. While there were other older bloggers before him, Randall Butisingh was unique as he typed out his blogs on his own even in his 90s.

“Teacher Randall attained his 100th birthday on December 1, 2012. He had always looked forward to his 100th Birthday and he attained that goal, like the many other goals he achieved over his long life.”

Cyril Bryan, Student and Friend

Randall was looking forward to his 100th birthday on December 1, 2012. He had a wonderful party for the occasion held at the Nursing Home in Florida and entered the erstwhile 100’s club. He is a fine example for our Mission Pledge-100-100-30 where we want more and more Indians to aspire to be tomorrow’s centenarians.

“This is a legacy I would like to leave to posterity, as I am sure many would be interested to know how they came to be living in this land and the life and work of their forefathers.”

Randall Butisingh in the Preface to his book “My Story”

Randall Butisingh passed away in 2012 but not before leaving behind his legacy. He is a constant source of inspiration for older adults who are at a loss on how to spend their time after retirement.
