Prostate resection surgery is advised for men with advanced cases of BPH. If the prostate enlargement is manageable, it is treated by medicines. There are two types of surgery performed to remove the prostate.

  1. Open prostatectomy: If the prostate gland is too big to remove using endoscopic methods, open surgery is carried out. Open surgery is also done to repair the urinary bladder. You may take a longer time to recover from open prostatectomy.
  2. Minimally invasive prostatectomy: If the prostate is smaller or doesn’t have to be removed completely, prostatectomy is done in an endoscopic manner. There are 4 types of this type of prostatectomy – TURP, TUIP, TUNA, and TUMT.

In general, most doctors in India prefer TURP as it involves a smaller incision and the recovery time is quicker.
