Dr. Dhananjay Chavan is a psychiatrist, a geriatrician, an author and an entrepreneur. He has an MD in Psychiatry and his postdoctoral fellowship is in Geriatric Mental Health. He has developed unique training programs for senior citizen care and devotes most of his time on issues around elderly care.
HappyAging had an exclusive discussion with Dr. Chavan on mental health and well-being of senior citizens and also his latest book – The Senior Citizens’ Handbook.
Dr. Chavan mentions that although Mental health issues like Depression are still considered a taboo by the elderly, the youngsters are talking openly about it. They are more open-minded due to changing times and they do not shy away from discussing Depression and Anxiety disorders. We can take the example of Deepika Padukone who is a youth icon and also someone who spoke openly about her struggle with and triumph over Depression.
They are also more open to seeking help for these issues. This works well because most of the youngsters are primary caregivers of their parents. Since they understand about Mental health issues better, they can recognize the symptoms in their parents and make sure they seek help. This ensures that the older adults do not suffer in silence and there’s someone to understand their issues and help them in dealing with them successfully.
