Dr. Sudhir Chavan is an expert in the field of Medical architecture and is the Principle,of Sihangad College of Architecture
HappyAging met Dr. Chavan at GSICON 2018, Pune where he discussed about medical architecture with us and how to make home environment safer for senior citizens.
Dr. Chavan says that elderly is a different community with different needs. Most of the elderly community is physically weak, dealing with an ailment or suffering from lack of memory. They also don’t have steady hands due to age. Moreover, some of them are also dealing with vision problems or hearing loss or simple physical stress.
Medical architects are specifically concerned with making things easier for senior citizens. Most of the common areas in a house where elderly need architectural support are bedrooms, washrooms, passages, staircases, etc. Architecture plays a big role in making a house fall-proof and friendlier for elderly.
It’s important that we acknowledge the geriatric community and don’t ignore their special needs anymore. The eldelry population is expanding up to 8-9% every year and they need to be taken care of. With specific architecture in a house, we can ensure that seniors are safe and can avoid falls and injuries. This goes a long way in ensuring safety and in turn sound health.
