Urine incontinence is the involuntary loss of urine. The severity ranges from loss of urine with a sudden cough or sneeze to be unable to control the bladder long enough before you can reach the toilet. Pregnancy, childbirth and menopause trigger this condition.

Aging and menopause are common reasons due to which women have prolonged urine incontinence.

In a research conducted in May, 2018 at the University of San Francisco, it was found out that the frequency of this condition declined by 75% in women who were performing yoga. These women were in the age group of 53 to 83 years. During this study, they gave up all other medicines and were solely doing yoga to treat the condition.

Yoga has been India’s gift to the world.  It is one of the ancient science for healing purposes. People practice yoga to achieve a balance between body, mind and soul. It has been known to manage a lot of conditions in women, especially thyroid.

So it is no surprise that practicing yoga could reduce the frequency of urine incontinence. As women become older, their pelvic floor muscles become weak. Pregnancy and childbirth are also contributing factors to weak pelvic floor muscles.

Here’s how yoga is beneficial to women dealing with the condition:

  • Studies have shown that regular practice of yoga strengthens the pelvic floor muscles.
  • Practicing yoga can also reduce stress, which is a major contributing factor in urinary incontinence.
  • Regular practice of yoga poses improves general physical fitness and conditioning, which have been shown to be protective against urinary incontinence in frail older women.
  • Deep breathing exercises can teach you better control on your mind, body and bring nervous system balance.
  • Yoga promotes overall fitness, which can reduce urinary incontinence.

If you are someone who has been dealing with urinary incontinence, yoga can be your answer. With age, it becomes even more imperative to focus on our fitness levels and yoga is the ideal way to do that.
