Manohar Parrikar, Goa Chief Minister and Human Extraordinaire Passes Away at 63, Battling Cancer
Manohar Parrikar, four times Goa Chief Minister, passed away at his son’s residence in Goa late evening on 17th March, 2019. He was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2018. He was 63 and is survived by his two sons.
Parrikar was an IITian and also served as the Defence Minister of India from 2014 to 2017. He was responsible for spearheading the surgical strike India carried out against terror groups in 2016 in PoK. He was the first IIT alumnus to serve as an MLA of Indian state.
By his own admission, he wanted to “serve Goa till his last breath.” This was visible through his commitment to his work in the state of Goa. He had turned up at the State Assembly wearing a nasogastric tube – a picture of frailty yet determination. He was the most favorite son of Goa and he ensured he never wavered in his duties, despite his failing health.
For the past year, Parrikar had been seeking treatment for his cancer in New York, Goa, Mumbai and New Delhi. In February 2019, his health deteriorated further and he was admitted in Goa Medical College and Hospital near Panaji.
He was a picture of grace, strength and leadership. Many leaders have expressed their grief and offered their condolences on the demise of such a visionary and strong person.
