Dr. Reema Kashiva is an M.D. in Diabetes and Obesity. She specializes in Bariatric Medicine. She practices in Pune at Noble Hospital, Hadapsar.
She explained how a person is categorized into overweight or obese according to their BMI. If the BMI is over 35, it is called morbid obesity and has to be treated accordingly.
Diabetes is closely associated with obesity, Dr. Reema says. In older adults, it causes a range of disorders called metabolic syndrome or Syndrome X. This syndrome is now observed in many older adults in recent times. In fact, she says, older adults with normal weight might also be at a risk of central obesity (large abdominal girth).
Dr. Kashiva talks about the various treatments and lifestyle changes an obese older adult has to undertake. Dr. Kashiva recommends treatment by natural processes. In most cases, she avoids involvement of surgery or even drugs to reduce weight. She believes that following good lifestyle practices benefits most people instead of blindly going in for bariatric surgery.
Dr. Kashiva also strongly believes that fad diets that do not complement the physiology of the body are not at all useful in treating obesity. They may show results in the short term, but might prove detrimental in the long term as they go against the grain of the body’s physiology.
