Prof. Tahir Masud is the President of the British Geriatric Society and his clinical and research interest is in the area of Osteoporosis.
HappyAging spoke to Prof. Masud at Geriatric Society of India Conference (GSICON) at Pune. Here are the excerpts from the discussion:
What are your views on Senior health care when it comes to Bone and Joint health?
Osteoporosis is a condition that has become important for the society to acknowledge. As the average age of people increases, the prevalence of Osteoporosis also increases. Osteoporosis leads to issues such as fractures and broken bones. Hip fracture is a very common and extremely painful condition and affects a person to a great extent.
Should older people be treated for Osteoporosis?
When somebody breaks a bone, they could have osteoporosis. Elderly should be considered for the treatment of osteoporosis. Studies show that treating older people on time with correct drugs and lifestyle changes is equally effective as it is when treating younger people. We need to ensure we don’t dismiss treating older people for this condition.
Any prevention measures for people in their 30’s and 40’s?
It’s important to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Have an active lifestyle, maintain a good diet and consider taking calcium supplements. Also avoid alcohol and smoking as an excess of these can lead to poor quality bones.
