On the day many Indians were rejoicing on the scrapping of Article 370, there came a tragic shock. We lost one of the most loved and prolific politicians of India, Smt. Sushma Swaraj, who died an untimely death at 67. According to the doctors at AIIMS, she passed away on the night of 6th August due to a cardiac arrest.
Sushma Swaraj was a leading senior politician of the BJP and a Supreme Court lawyer. She served as the External Affairs Minister of India from 2014-2019. She was the first full-time woman to hold this office after Indira Gandhi. She at 25 was the youngest cabinet minister in Haryana in 1977. Since then, she was elected seven times as a Member of Parliament (MP) and three times as a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA). She also served a short stint as the Chief Minister of Delhi in 1998, the first woman CM from BJP. She was called “India’s most loved politician” by the US daily Wall Street Journal.
Sushma Swaraj underwent a kidney transplant in 2016. Despite her age and prolonged health conditions, Swaraj led her departments like a warrior. But, she decided not to join the elections in 2019 to take care of herself. Her devoted husband Swaraj Kaushal thanked her for not contesting 2019 elections and praised her for her relentless devotion to Indian politics. He said, “Thank you very much for your decision not to contest any more elections. I remember there came a time when even Milkha Singh stopped running.”
Their striking chemistry was a delight to watch. Talking about her selfless work, Swaraj Kaushal once said, “Madam I am running behind you for the last 46 years. I am no longer a 19-year-old. Please, I am also running out of breath. Thank you!”
Leaders across India are shocked and grieved at the suddenness of the death of such a great leader. Everyone from the President to politicians of opposition parties has expressed condolences and are paying tribute to Sushma Swaraj.
Sushma Swaraj was not just famous for being a part of the leading political party, she was extremely tech-savvy and was known to take quick and correct decisions. Many Indians living or traveling abroad had to just tag her in their tweets and she responded immediately to them. In several instances, she helped Indians who had lost their passports abroad and were stranded in a foreign land.
She also traveled intensively, seeking and strengthening trade and social relations with other countries. However, she was known for her no-nonsense attitude and intolerance for any wrongdoings.
Sushma Swaraj was one of the strong-headed women leaders who have done a lot for women empowerment and are an inspiration for the young girls of today.
Sushma Swaraj’s transition from being a daughter of India to an Iron Lady was exceptional and nothing short of phenomenal. Undeniably, a lot of hard work and sweat has gone into her work.
In her last tweet on the day she died, i.e. August 6, she congratulated the Prime Minister of India for scraping Article 370 and said that she had been waiting to hear the decision since long.
प्रधान मंत्री जी – आपका हार्दिक अभिनन्दन. मैं अपने जीवन में इस दिन को देखने की प्रतीक्षा कर रही थी. @narendramodi ji – Thank you Prime Minister. Thank you very much. I was waiting to see this day in my lifetime.
