HappyAging got an opportunity to meet and greet Padma Vibhushan Shivshahir Babasaheb Purandare at his residence.
Surrounded by books, Babasaheb was reading his newspaper in utmost poise in his dimly lit room, when we entered his residence. With a pleasant smile on his face, he welcomed us and we were besotted by the glow of wisdom on his face.
Born on 29th July, 1922, this peerless historian has experienced the golden era of Shivaji Maharaj by reliving each and every episode of that era. We have heard him through many interviews. He has done it all and continues to inspire many at the age of 97 by relentlessly working.
HappyAging asked him to share the secret behind his inspiration to stay healthy.
True Devotee of History
Babasaheb is a proud historian, who has had an undying tendency to find the truth. His perseverance, madness for work, and strong memory are some of the remarkable characteristics of his persona. Apart from this invincible intelligence, capacity to analyze, excellent writing and elocution skills are his additional strengths. His sincere adherence to discipline and punctuality make him stand out. Due to this beautiful blend of all these aspects, the true followers of Shivaji Maharaj not only appreciate but also worship his work.
‘Express yourself after having deep knowledge,’ is one of the sayings of Shivaji Maharaj. Babasaheb followed this in his entire life. He pledged to study the history of Shivaji Maharaj and coeval history at the age of sixteen and till date, he is working with the same dedication. His life is literally like an ocean filled with inspiring stories.
Stunning Work Potential
While revealing the secret of his unparalleled work potential, he said, “I am a person who is very ambitious and I have no addiction. With the discipline of these two things, I have paved my way.” Babasaheb is a motivation for many people of this generation who tend to take their health and life for granted.
During this meet and greet session, he divulged one important virtue of his persona. He said, “I do not hate anyone.” He elaborated this characteristic with an example. Once someone who had published a very abusive article on Babasaheb Purandare, came to visit him. Babasaheb warmly welcomed him and it was not to make him feel ashamed or to showcase greatness but purely because this is how he is.
Nature’s gift of powerful memory
Babasaheb Purandare has a very powerful memory at this age. He can recall several dates and incidents that have happened several years ago. As compared to other elderly of his age, it can be said that it is a miracle of nature. He also has a remarkable sense of humor. He took a directory and showed us the name of a person who used to live with him. He told us with a mischevious smile on his face that he felt like seeing the person and so he called him, and said, “If you do not come and meet me within 15 days, I will shoot you.”
Persistence and positive thinking
He concluded the discussion saying, “I will work for at least the next two years. After all, this is God’s call, but I will try to maintain my studious attitude as long as I can.”
HappyAging, salutes Babasaheb Purandare’s persistence and ambitions. We wish him a healthy and long life ahead, where he can continue to inspire people for many more generations.
