Dr. Nitin Kolte is an Ophthalmologist and the Medical Director of Poona Eye Care centre in Pune.

Specialized in diagnosis and management of a wide variety of eye problems, Dr. Kolte has  has performed over 30,000 cataract surgeries and nearly 20,000 LASIK eye corrections with a high success rate.

HappyAging met Dr. Nitin Kolte at Poona Eye Care and learnt about vision problems in older adults.

About vision in older adults, Dr. Kolte says that as one ages, their vision becomes weaker, especially, it starts by the age of 40. He also says that the common reasons are usually diabetes, age and the usage of blue screens these days.

The common problems usually faced by older adults are cataract, glaucoma and age-related macular degeneration.

Regarding advancements, Dr. Nitin says that there is a good amount of research done on the replacement of retina and low vision aid spectacles, but the cost of such treatments are still high for the masses.

He advises all the go for eye checkups once every year post 40 and see a doctor in case of any trouble with the vision instead of self-treating through over the counter drops.
